A Tree Planting and Transitional Jobs Program
Each tree planting season, the Tree Foundation partners with the New Jersey Parole Board to hire a tree planting crew, creating transitional jobs for individuals under parole supervision. Transitional jobs are time-limited jobs that combine real work, skill development and support services to help participants overcome barriers to employment. Since spring 2006, this program has planted 14,899 trees and employed 97 parolees. This program is supported through contracts. You can hire our Green Streets crew to support this program.
Fall 2017: The Green Streets Crew planted 251 trees, excavated & planted two rain gardens, reforested & revitalized a floodplain with 2,300 tree whips, perennials and grasses. Crewmen also assisted staff with setting up & supervising four corporate plantings. The winter months will see the Green Streets crew pruning & mulching trees in Camden and doing inventory work.
Spring 2017: The Green Streets Crew planted 435 trees in several towns & cities. Two memorial trees and one tree in honor of were planted in our Grove of Rememberance. Post tree planting, the Crew will develop rain gardens, mulch, weed & prune the Grove of Remembrance and maintain green infrastructure projects in Camden.
Fall 2016: This fall our Green Streets crew planted 395 streets trees and 50 shrubs, created a rain garden in Newark & landscaped Broadway house with 11 trees and beautiful gardens. The crew also assisted our community-based tree planting programs with large tree events.
Fall 2015: This fall our Green Streets Crew planted 307 street trees and 30 shrubs, excavated one rain garden and assited our community-based tree planting programs with three large tree planting events. The crew contued to prune, weed and mulch trees in N. Camden, while also maintaining our 9/11 Grove of Remembrance.
This spring our Green Streets Crew planted 334 large street trees, 500 tree whips, excavated 10 rain gardens and maintained hundreds of NJ street trees. We completed our Asbury Park Releaf efforts by planting 32 more trees in the city with the support of American Forests, continued to maintaine our 9/11 Grove of Remembrance and pruned, mulched & watered trees across the state!Fall 2014 This fall, our Green Streets Crew planted 472 trees and created 4 rain gardens in North Jersey and a community garden in Camden. We planted 142 street trees in Asbury Park with support from American Forests and 13 utility friendly trees with suppot from PSE&G. We also planted 70,000 dune grass plants in Lavallette in partnership with the NJ Devils and Prudential Center. Spring 2014 This spring, our Green Streets crew planted 406 street trees and two rain gardens – one in Camden & one in Jersey City. 30 trees were planted at Presby Iris Gardens with the NJ Devils and PWC, and we passed the Super Bowl Host Committees shovel to Arazona with a tree planting in Brookdale park. Fall 2013 This fall, the Green Streets crew planted 538 street trees including reforesting towns that were hard hit by Superstorm Sandy.
This spring, the Green Streets crew planted 473 street trees and developed 3 rain gardens – two in Camden and 1 in Gloucester City, NJ. The crew was supported by a grant from the US Forest Service and contracted jobs totaling almost $52,000.
In fall 2012, the Green Streets crew planted 560 trees across NJ, and employed three ex-offenders. The crew was supported by both federal funding and 17 contracted jobs including street tree plantings, landscaping, maintenance work, rain gardens and Firewise gardens. Income generated through contract work was over $80,000.
